Bayview Research Group and the Merck V160-002 study are assessing the safety and effectiveness of a new vaccine for cytomegalovirus (CMV) for women ages 16 to 35.
CMV is a little-known virus that can be transmitted through bodily fluids, but rarely causes problems in healthy people.
However, if you get pregnant or have a weakened immune system, it can cause death, serious health issues, and permanent conditions like blindness and deafness in babies.
Congenital CMV, which means it is present at birth, affects approximately 30,000 children annually, one in every 200 babies born, making it the most common congenital viral infection in the United States.
One in every five children born with congenital CMV will develop permanent health problems (about 6,000 children) and as many as 400 infants will die each year.
Congenital CMV infection is arguably the most common preventable cause of neonatal disability in the United States. More children will have disabilities due to congenital CMV than other well-known infections and syndromes.
There is no cure for CMV, but now's your chance to help us develop the first vaccine.
WHAT TO EXPECT
If you are eligible to participate, we will ask you to come to our conveniently-located clinic for approximately eight visits over a three-year period.
The first six months will be to administer two or three doses of the study drug (or a placebo) and the subsequent 30 months will be the follow-up period.
These visits allow us to monitor your health and condition through vital signs (temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure) and physical examinations (including height and weight).
You will also need to collect and send samples of your saliva and urine each month to test for CMV. The study doctor will explain how to collect your samples.
You may need to come in for more study visits if you become pregnant during the study.
You may protect yourself and future children from the symptoms of CMV
